Zoysia Grass In St Augustine Out

To cover my yard in Zoysia grass has been a dream of mine since I bought my first house. I wanted my yard to mimic the look of a golf green. Only being aware of its beautiful appearance, and not knowing anything about the maintenance of the types of Zoysia grass, I had quietly carried that dream until I bought my fifth house. Believing my family would live in that house for a long time, I decided to take my time and make the yard as appealing and enjoyable as possible. My first objective was to buy some quality weedless St. Augustine grass, but in the process I was introduced to Zoysia Emerald grass.

I was searching for grass because my home builder, as many do today, only offered a fully sodded yard at a premium price. When faced with that option, I took the cheap route (and I say that tongue in cheek) and decided to lay my own sod grass. With that said and saving my home builder rant for another article, I will finish explaining my Zoysia grass experience.

While checking availability, price, and quality (no weeds) of St. Augustine sod at a local sod grass farm, I found that they also offer Zoysia Emerald. Once I discovered Zoysia, my focus for a new lawn changed. The person showing me the available grasses, which included Bermuda, noticed my reaction when I first saw the Zoysia sod up close. Because I came in looking for St. Augustine, which happens to be one of the cheapest sod grasses in the South, he suggested Bermuda as a middle ground between the two grasses. I'm sure that is because Zoysia is often mistaken for Bermuda by people unfamiliar with the various types of Zoysia grass.

Considering my dream lawn was within reach, I was definitely changing plans. We talked further about Zoysia grass and my largest concerns at that moment. The main issues were price, how fast does it grow, the most effective lawn mower for that type of grass and its rate of recovery from damages such as bugs and divets (kids will be kids). He also mentioned irrigation- suggesting a fully automated sprinkler system to maximize the lawn's beauty, while minimizing day to day lawn care.

As quickly as he explained possible difficulties with Zoysia, I dismissed any issues that could be problems in normal lawn care maintenance. It was just too exciting to let any downside of the project bring bring it to a hault. With the basic information about Zoysia Emerald, I was confident there were no insurmountable tasks associated with its installation and future lawn maintenance. The rewards from the extra work associated with Zoysia would be offset by the enjoyment derived from it. I imagined everyone visiting would have fun and enjoy the well maintained soft short cut luxurious green lawn.

Being so fired up about the dream project, I immediately placed an order for the pallets of sod grass and scheduled the quickest possible delivery time. I installed the Zoysia within two days of receiving the delivery. Our whole family has been enjoying it ever since. I have also received numerous compliments and questions about the type of grass it is. Although the lawn care maintenance turned out to be greater than originally expected, I am very happy to have made the decision to bring Zoysia grass in and take St. Augustine out.
